His great grandfather, grandfather, and father were all farmers before him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to farm after high school but couldn\u2019t, so I went to college and learned how to be a diesel mechanic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, Vern would finally get his chance to farm.\u00a0 A local farmer told him if he worked hard, he would some day lease him the land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did it.\u00a0 I stuck with him through thick and thin,\u201d Vern said with just a little pride in his voice.<\/p>\n<p>Vern raises wheat, hay, and sometimes barley. He also has a few cattle.<\/p>\n<p>Vern\u2019s wife, Shelley, works off the farm in Spokane, but there is no doubt she is an important partner in the Williams farm.\u00a0 Both are soft-spoken, but were adamant about the need to protect their crops from a bad storm or low prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that if we have a loss, that we wouldn\u2019t lose our livelihood; that\u2019s why we have it.\u00a0 So we can sleep at night,\u201d Shelley said.<\/p>\n<p>The Williams\u2019 talked about the year a bad storm came through their farm and hail wiped out their entire crop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember my first reaction when looking at the acres and there was nothing left was \u2018oh my god\u2019,\u201d said Shelley.\u00a0 \u201cBut then you remember you\u2019ve got insurance and the devastation is not nearly what it could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vern and Shelley are grateful the government provides crop insurance premium discounts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty years ago, we didn\u2019t have crop insurance.\u00a0 And I don\u2019t know why,\u201d Shelley said looking at Vern for the answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u00a0 It was too expensive,\u201d Vern replied.<\/p>\n<p>Both agreed they wouldn\u2019t still be farming without the premium support.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t hard to see Vern\u2019s commitment to his profession when you visit the farm.\u00a0 He isn\u2019t farming thousands of acres and doesn\u2019t have brand new equipment.\u00a0 But he is doing what he loves.\u00a0 And his wheat crop that summer reflected his determination to be the best farmer he can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe farm for broke every year,\u201d Vern said.\u00a0 \u201cWe want to get the best crop we can every year.\u00a0 If something comes up and crop insurance has to help you, that\u2019s fine.\u00a0 But that isn\u2019t why I farm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shelley agreed.\u00a0 \u201cIf we need to use crop insurance it\u2019s because something happened that\u2019s completely out of our control.\u00a0 You can do everything you are supposed to do as a farmer and still have a disaster through absolutely no fault of your own.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-10353","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
