They also have dairy operations, grow feed for cattle, and produce a large variety of fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>But growing crops in this part of California, which averages only seven inches of rainfall a year, can be challenging. And that\u2019s why this third-generation farmer buys crop insurance, just like his dad and grandfather did before him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn good years we never look to get any money from crop insurance.\u00a0 It\u2019s the bad years we are looking to cover,\u201d Yurosek said.<\/p>\n<p>Crops grown in this fertile valley can yield high profit when rain is ample and the winter is cool enough to produce adequate chill hours for the trees.\u00a0 When that doesn\u2019t happen and there isn\u2019t a crop to harvest, money becomes tight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe only get one shot at making money because we only get one crop each year,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019d have no way to recoup some of our costs if we didn\u2019t have crop insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yurosek only remembers a handful of times when they\u2019ve had to file a claim.\u00a0 And he\u2019s thankful for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have to make a claim that means we aren\u2019t profitable as a business,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can be a lot more financially stable taking a crop to harvest than we can with a check from the insurance company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yuroseks aren\u2019t the only family who relies on the success of the farm.\u00a0 The farm employs several full-time workers because the labor to care for the crops and take them to harvest is so high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to take care of our employees, but that\u2019s difficult to do if you don\u2019t have a crop on the trees\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s where crop insurance has been a huge help to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trickle-down effect of agriculture in Kern County is obvious when you drive through the small towns located there.\u00a0 Agriculture surrounds them.\u00a0 There are implement dealers, seed and fertilizer businesses, packing houses, and mechanics, just to name a few.\u00a0 One out of every five jobs is either directly or indirectly related to this $7 billion industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur employees spend a lot of money in this county,\u201d said Yurosek. \u201cAnd we do, too.\u00a0 There are a lot of vendors who aren\u2019t associated with agriculture who provide us with goods and services.\u00a0 We need paper and supplies for our office.\u00a0 Furniture for our homes. And that puts a lot of money back into the local economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farming isn\u2019t the easiest of occupations no matter where you live. Mother Nature can throw a lot of curve balls.\u00a0 World markets effect the price you receive for the commodities you grow.\u00a0 And input costs seem to rise whether prices go up or down.\u00a0 Yurosek says he pays 20 percent more in labor costs and 300 times more for water than he did just a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>But while the challenges can be overwhelming at times, Yurosek says he can\u2019t image doing anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m incredibly fortunate to be part of a family farming operation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a business that means more than just making money.\u00a0 It\u2019s about providing jobs and providing healthy, beneficial food for the world, but especially for the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":10356,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-10355","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
