Although the rains from Hurricane Isaac brought relief\u00a0to some, the portion of the lower 48 states still\u00a0experiencing moderate to exceptional drought\u00a0increased to 64%, up one percent from last week,\u00a0according to the September 11 U.S. Drought Monitor. \u00a0In 42%of those states, the drought conditions are\u00a0considered \u201csevere, extreme or exceptional.\u201d In addition,\u00a054%of the country was in moderate drought or worse.<\/p>\n
The majority of the country\u2019s corn and soybean acres are\u00a0affected, and while it\u2019s too early to predict the full extent\u00a0of agricultural damage, based on weather data, the\u00a0losses will likely be greater than 2011 and could rival the\u00a0flood losses of 1993.
