{"id":3898,"date":"2013-03-05T08:00:56","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T13:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ncis.staging.wpengine.com\/?p=3898"},"modified":"2013-03-05T08:00:56","modified_gmt":"2013-03-05T13:00:56","slug":"new-video-criticisms-against-farmers-who-purchase-crop-insurance-naive-untrue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iripreviewsite.com\/cropinsuranceinamerica\/new-video-criticisms-against-farmers-who-purchase-crop-insurance-naive-untrue\/","title":{"rendered":"New Video: Criticisms Against Farmers Who Purchase Crop Insurance Na\u00efve, Untrue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(OVERLAND PARK, Kan.) \u2014 Critics who said that farmers who purchased crop insurance were \u201cpraying for drought, not praying for rain\u201d or were \u201claughing all the way to the bank\u201d during last summer\u2019s historic drought were strongly rebuked by farmers, crop insurance agents and claims adjusters in a new <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/cCuQoVSDUz0\" target=\"_blank\">video <\/a>released today by National Crop Insurance Services (NCIS).<\/p>\n<p>Marvin Andris, a farmer from Milford, Illinois, responded to Environmental Working Group\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/video\/farmers-and-insurers-reap-crop-insurance-bucks-s4tNaiu3TDSGTkWzn_9~ag.html\" target=\"_blank\">accusations<\/a>, noting that their comments underscored how little they know about farmers. \u201cThey obviously haven\u2019t brushed shoulders with any farmer,\u201d he said. Andris said he didn\u2019t know a single farmer who farmed for an insurance check. \u201cWe\u2019re into this because we want to raise crops, and the more bountiful, the more excited we become,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly don\u2019t see anybody, as far as I know, that is seriously farming looking for a drought, and looking for a crop insurance check,\u201d said Ben Hanawa, a field claims adjuster from San Benito, Texas. He explained that crop insurance can help you make it through a bad year, \u201cbut it certainly is no way to make a living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Finch, a claims adjuster from Tulia, Texas, noted that charges that farmers are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2012-07-26\/farmers-may-see-gains-amid-drought-with-u-s-backed-insurance.html\" target=\"_blank\">happy <\/a>to incur losses demonstrated both a misunderstanding of the nature of farmers and how crop insurance works. \u201cI\u2019ve never heard of anybody or talked or visited with any farmer who would rather have an insurance check than he would have a good crop that he could bank on his own,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of pride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert Geddes, a farmer from Hoopeston, Illinois, explained that crop insurance is not any different than other forms of insurance that consumers buy on a daily basis, like homeowner\u2019s insurance or car insurance. \u201cYou don\u2019t buy insurance on your car with idea of going out and having a wreck,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s to take care of [you], when things truly go against you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Todd Harris, an insurance agent from Rossville, Illinois, explained that most of the farmers in that part of the state have never had a claim of this nature. \u201cAll you got to do is be a mathematician, really, to figure out if you\u2019d be better with a claim, or a crop,\u201d he said. Harris noted \u201cif you ask that question of a farmer, they\u2019ll laugh at you.\u201d That\u2019s because farmers make far more from a good crop than an insurance claim, he explained.<\/p>\n<p>These were not the only misrepresentations farm policy critics made during last year\u2019s historic drought. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/the-enormous-costs-of-the-2012-drought-to-american-farmers-and-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Claims<\/a> were made that indemnity payments for the drought would range from $20 billion to $40 billion. The Congressional Budget Office noted earlier this month that 2012 indemnity payments will be closer to $16 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Those same critics also led people to believe that taxpayers would be responsible for nearly all crop insurance payments to farmers, which is another fallacy.
