{"id":5786,"date":"2015-01-20T09:59:37","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T14:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ncis.staging.wpengine.com\/?p=5786"},"modified":"2015-01-20T09:59:37","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T14:59:37","slug":"ncis-president-tom-zacharias-talks-crop-insurance-on-agri-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iripreviewsite.com\/cropinsuranceinamerica\/ncis-president-tom-zacharias-talks-crop-insurance-on-agri-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"NCIS President Tom Zacharias Talks Crop Insurance on Agri-Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The increasingly important role of crop insurance to farmers, ranchers and producers across the country \u2013 and its place of prominence in the 2014 Farm Bill \u2013 were among the many topics of conversation during Mike Adams\u2019 recent interview with NCIS President Tom Zacharias on <em>Agri-Talk<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think this is a very positive Farm Bill for farmers and ranchers in the U.S. and for the crop insurance industry in general,\u201d said Zacharias.<\/p>\n<p>Zacharias pointed out that crop insurance has changed dramatically over the last 10 to 15 years, now protecting 294 million acres with crop insurance premiums running at about $10 billion.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s a liability of $110 billion of coverage for America\u2019s farmers and ranchers,\u201d noted Zacharias.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a private\/public partnership and on both sides of the equation, the companies involved have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders and with the public sector,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Zacharias pointed out that the last few years have posed some real challenges to both farmers and crop insurance companies.\u00a0 \u201cIf you look over the last couple of years, we have faced some headwinds,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cTake the situation in 2012 with the extensive drought we had in the Midwest.\u00a0 Last year, when we had the swing in prices and a lot of other revenue policies kicked in, so there were indemnities paid there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zacharias also explained that in order for crop insurance to remain strong, it must remain viable to the private sector.\u00a0 \u201cIt is important for the private sector to remain viable.\u00a0 If you look at where this Farm Bill has taken us, the availability for farmers to have different risk management options, affordability of that part of the program remains very much intact.\u00a0 We need both farmers and insurers to see reasonable returns in this business to help manage the risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zacharias said the 2014 Farm Bill has maximized choices for the farmer.\u00a0 \u201cWith that choice, comes great responsibility,\u201d he added.\u00a0 He noted that there are many Title I provisions that farmers needs to be aware of so they can purchase the protection they need.\u00a0 That, of course, is where the industry\u2019s 12,000 agents come into play.\u00a0 \u201cThey will need to go out and seek the expertise of both the crop insurance agency force as well as those folks in extension and farm managers who are grinding through the Title I Component,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full transcript of the interview <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncis.staging.wpengine.com\/tom-zacharias-interview-on-agritalk-december-2014\/#.VK_u7CujNJw\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The increasingly important role of crop insurance to farmers, ranchers and producers across the country \u2013 and its place of prominence in the 2014 Farm Bill \u2013 were among the [&hellip;]<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":5797,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5786","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-insight","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
